Privatization (12.09.2009)

In the last 20 years the once public companies like 'Japan Railways' and 'Japan Airlines' were privatized. From the past those companies face some legacy problems. Especially 'Japan Airlines' has the problem of political influence and pension scheme costs. Selling Japan Airlinges (JAL) to a foreign airline company seems to be a way out of the high indebted situation the company faces and a solution the Ministry for Transportation seems to prefer. The offer by Delta Airlines is a first start to get interested parties on the table. Nevertheless the pension costs weigthing on JAL are significant. Probably a political solution is necessary for this company.

Ratings: Japan Air Lines           'red'  (I put the red here in September 2009 and now 20th of January 2010 JAL is
                                                   bankrupt)
              ANA                           'green'
Japan Railways companies (now localized and privatized) in general 'green' rating
