Since April 2011 TSE puplishes a monthly price index for used condominiums in the Kanto area (Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama). It is quite helpful to see the different developments of the center and the close by prefectures also the economic downturn reflected in the used condominium prices. This source is also quite objective to get a feeling about property prices independently from broker stories. It shows that investment into properties in the last 20 years was not giving returns and with a shrinking population difficult to imagine it will be in the future. Buying instead of renting could be a bad bet as you can probably always buy later much cheaper especially if it is not in central Tokyo area.
